Many of my LWP Brides choose to include a veil in their wedding day look. And why not?! Adding a veil as part of your accessories for your wedding, for me, really completes the bridal vision. Veils can bring an unexpected dimension to your wedding portraits to help create incredible moments!

Yet, do you know what it takes to make a veil fly? And not all veils can fly equally? You probably never thought about it, right? If you are obsessed with beautiful photos of couples framed by a floating veil then you need to know the basic elements of what makes a veil fly before choosing the perfect one for your big day. Because not all veils are made to effortlessly float in the wind! And as a wedding photographer, I don’t want you to be disappointed if your veil doesn’t quite give you those perfect flying properties. So here are my tips for choosing the best veil for the coveted fluttering veil portraits!

1. Avoid Heavy Beading | Tons of detail and beading will weigh down your veil and prevent a natural look to veil shots. If you absolutely must have some detail on your veil, I would suggest choosing lace over beading for a timeless look plus the ability to go airborne.
2. One Layer is Best | Multiple layers of tulle can be hard to toss.
3. Longer Flies More Naturally | A longer veil tends to more freely fly for photos. And don’t get me started on how GORGEOUS Cathedral length veils are for dramatic pictures!
4. Off-White is Easier on the Eyes | Some veils can actually photograph “blue” if they are pure white. This can be hard to hide, even during the editing process. This is the same for stark white dresses. Off-white, light creams or ivories are actually better for photos.
5. Fine Tulle Flies More Freely | If the tulle in your veil is stiff and rigid it’s a little more difficult to flow freely in the air.
