I am a wedding and portrait photographer who keeps things light, fun, and full of energy. I’m based out of Springfield, Illinois however I love traveling all over the midwest and beyond.

Now it’s the groom’s turn! Last week I focused on you, the bride and all the detail options you could have prepared and ready to go when I arrive to begin photographing on the morning of the wedding day! See the bride’s guide HERE! This post is all about the guys! The groom will be showing off his style and dapper look too and the details in his attire are worth documenting as well! So today I’m sharing a few ideas of different items the husband to be should have ready to photograph when myself or a second photographer arrives on the big day! Getting ready photos for the groom is historically a way more laid back experience than over at the bridal suite. Not necessarily with the mood in the room (believe me, my girls are pretty laid back) but in the number of items to have prepared. Nevertheless, those items tell a story about the groom’s day and have a place to be captured! With all that being said here are a few pieces the groom could have included in his detail photos the morning of the wedding day!
The groom’s shoes are part of his attire that he can customize to his own taste. Gone are the days when you rented a suit you received a generic pair of rented shoes. The groom can now have a distinct pair of great footwear to help him stand out from his groomsmen.
Along with the shoes, socks are where your groom and his buddies next to him can have a bit of fun without being over the top! It’s the perfect groomsman gift too! The socks can have a common theme or be an inside joke between each individual guy and the groom! And the best part? Socks are something that everyone needs, but you won’t necessarily see on your groom! So if he wants to go crazy…Let him!
Again another great opportunity to help your man show his personality! Maybe a bowtie is a simple change from the rest of his guys in neckties. Or a different color or pattern you groom, who is spontaneous, likes to sport. But, a tie (bow or knot…get it?) has endless possibilities!
This handy accessory not only helps your guy keep his pants from falling down, but it can not be a fashion statement! Did you know suspenders are now available in leather? How amazing would that be?
This is the groom’s jewelry! If he already has an amazing timepiece that he adores or you decide to gift him one on the big day, a watch is a statement piece he will want to remember.
Is your groom wearing cufflinks owned by his father or even grandfather? Maybe these small items have some other special meaning to him like a gift from his parents? Although they are small they will have a big impact and you will want to have them photographed!
You’re not the only one that will want to smell good on your wedding day! Men’s cologne can be an amazing accessory to photograph. As the bride, you will not see this during the day, but the scent of your new husband when you see him for the first time will stay with you forever!
This can be left up to the groom if you wish! Coming back to the sentimental items, which may not be on full display for all your guests to see, yet have a deeper meaning to your man…let’s capture it! If he and his best friends get together and smoke celebratory cigars or cheers to a glass of bourbon. Tell him to have those available to photograph along with his attire pieces. These can add something a little extra and fun to the standard shots and make them more personal.
