I am a wedding and portrait photographer who keeps things light, fun, and full of energy. I’m based out of Springfield, Illinois however I love traveling all over the midwest and beyond.
inquire about your session!
Engagement session season is right around the corner for me! The springtime brings warmer weather, vibrant blooms, and engaged couples being photographed before their upcoming wedding. I love this time of the year after everyone has been cooped up inside and I haven’t been shooting as often. I am ready to start a new year and create so many memories, not just in the photographs I take, but with the couples I have the honor of spending time with. Couples (or should I say mainly brides) are very much looking forward to this moment of engagement photos on their journey toward the alter. Guys, fear not! I am there to have fun with you both and by the end of your session, my goal is for you to enjoy yourself as well as fall a little more in love with your fiancé. If that’s even possible! Then a thought hits the bride. She gets nervous followed by a bit of a “deer in headlights” moment when she realizes she has to decide what they both will wear. Take a breath….I’m here to help!
My number one bit of advice to my brides about what to wear for their engagement session is to focus on your personalities. Yes, certain “rules” are out there to have matching outfits and such. Yet, not all rules apply for engagement sessions. Creating your own unique session based on your relationship is key. The time we spend together and the photos that come out of your session should reflect your joy, admiration, and intimate moments you don’t often express on a daily basis towards your fiancé. And choosing what to wear is part of that expression of who you two are as a couple. You want to be thoughtful about your choices and pick first and foremost, clothes that compliment your body type. If you don’t feel comfortable in your clothes, you will not look comfortable in your photos. I want the most authentic side of you both to come out when shooting and you can’t do that if you are stressing out about your clothing. Whether it’s flirty and flowy, or more structured and form fitting, you should feel like yourself in whatever you choose. This goes for the groom as well. If he is a suit and tie kinda guy, let’s show that off! But, if he is more of a plaid button down or polo guy…go with that! For all of my engagement sessions, I suggest picking 2-3 outfits. One more dressy outfit for you both. Then 1-2 more casual outfits. If your style is more fashion forward and you love more formal dressed up looks, that is completely fine. Again, my goal is to capture your personalities as well as your connection with each other. By dressing yourselves to feel good in what you are wearing, your focused on your fiancé and that is when the magic happens.
If you still aren’t sure on where to start, I tell brides to pick something they LOVE and what THEY want to wear for their session. Because if we are being honest, most grooms are not as concerned about what they are wearing for photos. So if you start with what makes you happy, the rest will fall into place. You may love a dress, scarf, or a top then build off of this piece. If you choose a printed dress for yourself, then maybe look at either a solid shirt for your guy or even a more muted checkered or plaid option so you don’t have two loud patterns competing against one another. Or simply pair a coordinating tie for him that compliments your outfit. And vice versa if you have a solid pretty lace number you love on yourself, then you could dress your man in more colorful or brighter pattern if you wish. Many couples have a love for a specific sports team and ask if they can incorporate jerseys into the mix. Go for it! I’m a huge lover of sports so we will always have fun with representing your team (unless you are a Cowboys fan and then I’ll have to think about it!) Go Eagles! 😉 Lastly, don’t be afraid of color! You don’t have to be in head to toe color, but pops of color in your shoes, a fun scarf, or even an adorable hat can work wonders to bring life and spontaneity to your session.
Ultimately no matter what choices my clients make on what to wear I know we will have a wonderful time learning about each other and growing our relationship. Oh, and their cozy and loving moments together will translate into beautiful heirloom photos they will keep forever.
Warm Regards,
Lauren
